About
Derek was born in Halifax and raised in Dartmouth and despite travelling extensively and living abroad, he returned home to start his own family.
Derek was drawn to the practice of law from a young age, having been a mediator to his peers’ disputes throughout school and his personal life. After 8 years of practicing law, Derek appreciates that his clients often only need him immediately following the worst day of their lives, whether it was a recent separation, a criminal charge, the involvement of child protective services or sometimes a combination of them all. Understanding, patience and sympathy are all part of the service Derek provides, but he will give his honest opinion and not waste time or money trying to achieve the impossible. Derek provides a positive atmosphere and is a confident lawyer who will put a client at ease, reduce their stress and do so with the cost of living in mind. He is all for reducing conflict, finding a middle ground that does not compromise safety and being reachable.
Derek’s biggest passions outside of practicing law have been sport, travel and board games. He was a successful varsity swimmer, having represented his university, province and country, but now he enjoys all kinds of sports, in particular, tennis and running. Derek was an avid traveler until things slowed down when he became a father, but somehow he remains very good at Scrabble and tries to be good at strategy board games.
